devil in the white cityThe Devil in The White City by Erik Larson  Purchase - secure Amazon

Relentlessly fuses history and entertainment to give this nonfiction book the dramatic effect of a novel. . . . A dynamic, enveloping book. . . . It doesn't hurt that this truth is stranger than fiction." --The New York Times

This book came to me last year, it had been highly recommended by a few people who love books.  I was at a conference and an Exec at Random House spoke about the fact that it was his favorite book of all time.  Devil in The White City is fascinating, it is two stories in one, the first an account of a serial killer living and killing in the vicinity of the Chicago Worlds Fair, the second and for me the most interesting the story of how the 1893 worlds fair came about and its impact on North American culture and construction.  This is a book that is hard to put down and reads like fiction but more riveting because its not. If you pay close attention, you also get a clue as to why Disneyland ever came to be many years later.  - Dagny

Daniel Hudson Burnham, a young American architect, became director of works for the World Columbian Exposition and, in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, set out to build a gleaming fairground that would assert America's place in the world. Just a stone's throw away, Dr. Henry H. Holmes had his own master plan one that involved luring young women into horrifying traps to satisfy his sadistic desires. Together, their stories one inspiring, one bone-chilling form a riveting portrait of a nation grappling with extraordinary technological progress and new urban threats. Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction.

"An irresistible page-turner that reads like the most compelling, sleep-defying fiction." --Time Out New York

For the Thrill of It by Simon Baatz

It was a crime that shocked the nation: the brutal murder in Chicago in 1924 of a child by two wealthy college students who killed solely for the thrill of the experience. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were intellectuals-too smart, they believed, for the police to catch them. When they were apprehended, state's attorney Robert Crowe was certain that no defense could save the ruthless killers from the gallows. But the families of the confessed murderers hired Clarence Darrow, entrusting the lives of their sons to the most famous lawyer in America in what would be one of the most sensational criminal trials in the history of American justice.

Set against the backdrop of the 1920s-a time of prosperity, self-indulgence, and hedonistic excess in a lawless city on the brink of anarchy-For the Thrill of It draws the reader into a world of speakeasies and flappers, of gangsters and gin parties, with a spellbinding narrative of Jazz Age murder and mystery.

glass castleThe Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls   Purchase - secure Amazon  Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.

Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.

What is so astonishing about Jeannette Walls is not just that she had the guts and tenacity and intelligence to get out, but that she describes her parents with such deep affection and generosity. Hers is a story of triumph against all odds, but also a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that despite its profound flaws gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

For two decades, Jeannette Walls hid her roots. Now she tells her own story.

king of heistsKing of Heists: The Sensational Bank Robbery of America by J. North Conway  - King of Heists is a spellbinding and unprecedented account of the greatest bank robbery in American history, which took place on October 27, 1878, when thieves broke into the Manhattan Savings Institution and stole nearly $3 million in cash and securities-around $50 million in today's terms. Bringing the notorious Gilded Age to life in a thrilling narrative, J. North Conway tells the story of those who plotted and carried out this infamous robbery, how they did it, and how they were tracked down and captured.

The robbery was planned to the minutest detail by criminal mastermind George Leonid’s Leslie-a society architect and ladies' man whose double life as the nation's most prolific bank robber led him to be dubbed the "King of the Bank Robbers." The New York Times proclaimed the 1878 heist "the most sensational in the history of bank robberies in this country."

An absorbing tale of greed, sex, crime, betrayal, and murder, King of Heists blends all the richness of history with the thrills of the best fiction.

How Businesses Can Thrive in the New Global Neighborhoods

by Shel Israel (Author)

Twitter is the most rapidly adopted communication tool in history, going from zero to ten million users in just over two years. On Twitter, word can spread faster than wildfire. Companies no longer have the option of ignoring the conversation.
Unlike other hot social media spaces, Twitterville is dominated by professionals, not students. And despite its size, it still feels like a small town. Twitter allows people to interact much the way they do face-to-face, honestly and authentically. One minute, you're complaining about the weather with local friends, the next, you're talking shop with a colleague based halfway across the globe.
No matter where you're from or what you do for a living, you will find conversations on Twitter that are valuable. Despite the millions of people joining the site, you'll quickly find the ones who can make a difference to you.
Social media writer Shel Israel shares revealing stories of Twitterville residents, from CEOs to the student who became the first to report the devastation of the Szechuan earthquake; from visionaries trying to raise money for a cause to citizen journalists who outshine traditional media companies.

Israel introduces you to trailblazers such as:
*Frank Eliason, who used Twitter to reverse Comcast's blemished customer service reputation
*Bill Fergus, who was on the team at Henry Ford Medical Center during the first "live tweeted" surgery
*Scott Monty, social media officer for Ford, who held off a mob of misinformed Ranger fans and averted a PR crisis
*Connie Reece, who used Twitter to raise tens of thousands of dollars for cancer patients in need
*The Coffee Groundz, a Houston-area coffee shop that uses Twitter to pack the tables (and fight off Starbucks)

"Twitterville" features many true stories as dramatic as these. But it also recounts those of ordinary businesspeople who use Twitter to get closer to their customers. And it explains how global neighborhoods will make geography increasingly irrelevant.
It even explains why people sometimes really do care what you had for lunch.
